Kevin Koontz is the Academic Coordinator for Outdoor Pathways and an adjunct professor specializing in Outdoor Recreation. Since 2013, he has played a vital role in SUU’s outdoor programs, overseeing educational components for the Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative (IIC) internships and advising students on academic credit applications. He has co-chaired the University of the Parks committee since 2018 and was instrumental in developing SUU’s Public Lands and National Parks Studies minor alongside Professor Ryan Paul in 2022.

A four-time alumnus of SUU, Kevin holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Outdoor Recreation in Parks & Tourism (emphasizing Outdoor Education) and History, as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration (with a focus on Student Service) and Interdisciplinary Studies (specializing in National Parks and Public Lands). He previously earned two Associate of Arts degrees from Fullerton College—one in English and another in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Art and Human Expression, blending theatre, communication, philosophy, and literature.

Before transitioning to higher education, Kevin worked for the Disneyland Resort, Trader Joe's, and Rosco Laboratories. He also performed with a Los Angeles improv group and coached a competitive high school improv team. Certified as a Wilderness First Responder with the Wilderness Medicine Training Center and an Interpretive Guide and Trainer with the National Association for Interpretation, he brings a dynamic, hands-on approach to teaching.

Passionate about outdoor engagement, Kevin played a key role in SUU’s victories in the 2015 and 2017 Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge, highlighting the university’s prime location for adventure. In his free time, he enjoys reading, backpacking, and earning junior ranger badges with his son.
