International Cinema @ SUU screening

(2007) –France, USA– animation / drama

Language: French (96 minutes)

Synopsis:Persépolis, both funny and dark, recounts the childhood and coming of age of Marjane Satrapi, who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and whose graphic novel Persépolis was the inspiration for the film. Directed by Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud, the film recounts how plucky little Marji is sent from the warmth of her childhood home in Teheran, where she was surrounded by her loving family, to study in Vienna, because her parents fear she could meet trouble from the more and more repressive regime in Iran. Vienna comes with its own set of challenges, as Marji finds herself in a whole new world, without family and with a new set of challenges. Satrapi’s art is moving, fun, and funny, and it translates a world of emotions as we follow Marjane to adulthood in this lively, engaging and sometimes tragic story.
